What is a Plunge Bra?

There are many misconceptions about the spectacular Plunge Bra style, and we are here to bust them! Plunge bras are an incredible option for nearly every outfit, and yet most women look right past them.

The unique cup shape does so much more than just look good under a low-cut top. Continue reading to hear all about why Hourglass Lingerie believes the plunge bra is the underdog of all bra styles!

All About Plunge Bras

As you likely guessed, a Plunge Bra is characterized by a deep neckline that goes right to the center gore (aka the piece of fabric connecting the two cups). It draws breasts together from the center of the cup, creating an enhanced, but natural look.

The cups are angled up instead of flat or rounded, as in a balconette or full-coverage bra. Because of this, they offer a little less coverage than those styles, but do not lose any support! The wider straps sit closer to the shoulder which help to make them easily hidden in clothing without compromising support.

The angled cups also mean the underwire is shorter and therefore leads to less poking and prodding. This is a wonderful feature for women who find higher wires found in other bra styles uncomfotable.

Plunge bras may also come with or without padding, showing just how versatile this bra style can be. Whether there is or isn’t padding, this bra will always be sure to make your cleavage look spectacular.

How Can a Plunge Bra Benefit You?

Plunge bras come in lots of variety, so you can be assured that there is one that will suit your body type. They will also fit better than other bra styles for many women. Women whose breast are less full at the top will find this bra does an excellent job at preventing gapping, leaving you with an impeccable fit.

On the other hand, plunge bras will suit full-figured women just as well. Many people believe fuller breasts will spill out of the cup, but this is a misconception. A well-fitted plunge bra, especially one with a mesh top, will prevent spilling in almost every case.

No mater what size or shape, plunge bras frame your curves, making you feel confident in everyway.

Our favorites at Hourglass Lingerie are the Elomi Matilda EL8900 Black Underwire Plunge Bra and the Parfait Casey 2801 European Nude Plunge Molded Bra.

When Should I Wear a Plunge Bra?

Obviously, a plunge bra is everyone’s first pick for a low-cut shirt or dress. However, did you know plunge bras can be a first choice for everyday wear?

Other instances where a plunge bra is the perfect style solution include:

  • Fitted tops
  • Thin clothing
  • T-shirts
  • Casual or Formal attire
  • Date night
  • Girls' night out

They are also inherently comfortable and supportive- not to mention super trendy and cute. We love the confidence boost we get from a little bit of cleavage added to our day.

Our honest opinion is to wear them with everything, don’t just save them for low-cut!

When Should I Not Wear a Plunge Bra?

It is undeniable that plunge bras offer a great little boost to cleavage. If you’re not looking for any attention in that area, you may be better suited for a Full-Coverage Bra.

Other instances where we recommend a different bra style include:

  • Women who are looking for a more dramatic bust enhancement (A bra style that may be more suited for you is a Push-Up Bra)
  • Women post breast surgery (A Mastectomy Bra may be the best option for you)
  • Women who are looking for a bra without padding or underwire (A Bralette may be the best option for you)

Otherwise, the versatility of plunge bras makes them great for most other situations!

Plunge Bra Sizing

Because plunge bras come in so many different stylings and designs, there is definitely a perfect plunge bra for you. You may notice they fit a little differently than other bras because of how they cover the top of the breast.

Start with your typical bra size and move from there. You’ll know you’ve found the perfect fit when you feel supported and lifted but are not spilling out of the cups. The easiest way to size yourself is to check out our Size Guide and read up on all of our tips and tricks.
